The behaviour of two-phase solid-fluid systems is determined essentially by the heterogeneous nature of the material considered. Treatment of the solid phase as a continuum relies greatly on statistical mechanics, which is not used simply to predict the value of the rheological parameters appearing in the constitutive equations, but to establish the very form of the constitutive equations themselves.
