Maintenance-an urgent topic for education in China

In recent decades, Chinese industry has developed very rapidly, and thousands and thousands of automatic production lines and automatic machines have been introduced. It is common knowledge that after 8 to 10 years use, the machines will get into the stage of aging in which faults or failures happen frequently. The contradiction between advanced equipment and lack of talent is very serious. Technical progress of equipment is superior to the progress in the field of qualified maintenance personnel. Maintenance is becoming an urgent topic for education in China. The author also introduces one of the earliest institution for maintenance education in China---Technological Faculty of Maintenance Engineering (TFME for short), Guangzhou University. The teaching program, curriculum, and general profile of this institution is described. In this paper, the concept of maintenance, the difference between Engineering Education and Maintenance Education, the multi-layer modular structure of teaching, the combination of teaching and industrial service as well as the practical feature of maintenance education based on the teaching activities of TFME are also discussed.
