A succession of four European COST projects have successfully stimulated research on topical concerns on tropospheric radioiwave propagation. These have led to reports and expertise relevant to system planning in Europe and to world-wide planning through contributions to ITU-R (and previously CCIR). Most recently COST Project 235 has investigated and rported on constraints and opported on constraints and opportunities for radiowave propagation on future digital and millimetre-wave systems, primarily for fixed terrestrial systems(1). Specifically, it examined effects of frequency-seolective fading (e.g. due to multipath propagation) and non-frequency-selective fading (e.g. due to atmospheric gases, precipitation and scintillation), and site shielding and other interference reduction strategies. The project was essentially committed to meeting user requirements. Brief mention is als made iin this paper of one new project and of a future planned project.
