It is valuable to research the feasibility and uncertainty of retrieving the lightning discharge current parameters on the basis of lightning location data. This paper presents the calculated VLF signal waveforms and their fast transition characteristics of radiated electric field by lightning return stroke. It is shown that the rise tiem increases significantly and the initial peak amplitude decreases obviously, but the rise time increases significantly and the initial peak amplitude decreases obviously, but the zero-crossing time is almost invariable as ground conductivity increase or propagation path lengthen. Therefore it is necessary to correct the propagation effects for retrieving the peak value and rise rate of lightning discharge current. In addition uncertainty of the retrieved peak vale may be less than 15
