Advanced Laser Ultrasonic Receivers for Industrial Applications

Laser-based ultrasound is a very promising method for noncontact testing of materials, components and structures [1]. One critical element of an LBU system is the laser ultrasonic receiver. The specific requirements of such a receiver are: (1) a surface displacement sensitivity in the A range with a processing bandwidth of at least 10 MHz, (2) the ability to process distorted beams from rough surfaces and (3) the ability to compensate for dynamic wavefront disturbances resulting from turbulence, workpiece translation and mechanical noise. In addition, the receiver should be simple in design and capable of operation in an industrial environment. In this report we will describe recent progress on developing rugged, adaptive receivers which meet all the above requirements.
