High rates of pulverised coal injection at hoogovens

The ironmaking facilities at Hoogovens consist of two coke plants, a sinter plant, a pellet plant and a PCi installation to provide the ingredients necessary for producing hot metal. The PCI plant is of the Armco/Babcock & Wilcox type, which came into operation in 1983. The system was initially disigned to inject a miximum of 100 kg/THM into Blast Furnace No. 6&7, but extensive modifications to the system over the years and the addition of a third grinding facility in 1995 means that, currently, a continuous PCi rae of 220 kg/TGM is maintained at both Furnaces. The rate of coal injection currently exceeds 1.2 million tons per year, and more than seven million tons of coal have been injected to date.
