The measurement of humidity plays a role of undoubtable importance in industry, including many sectors as diverse as aerospace, electrical, pharmaceutical, textile and food. Many industrial processes depend on the traceability of humidity measurement, the importance of which is gaining greater recognition. Practical traceability for humidity measurement in the calibration laboratory using chilled mirror hygrometers is discussed, with particular reference to the characterisation of the transfer standards and a method for maintaining confidence in the traceability imported from the National Standards Laboratory. The methods described have enabled the Institute to maintain the best measurement capability for the calibration of humidity measurement instruments accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service.
