As the United States begins to seriously consider laboratory accreditation for calibration labs, the calibration of gage blocks (one of the most accurate and sophisticated of industrial measurements) has been suggested as the prototype dimensional laboratory accreditation. One of the technical problems in implementing laboratory accreditation is determining the laboratory accuracy which is adequate for calibration systems. I will discuss some of the problems inherent in the classification schemes of both the US and ISO standards and their relation to the current state of the art for gage block calibration.
