Pulsed electrical current measurements to 60 kA_(rms) or higher are unfamiliar to even experienced metrologists. Measurements of high pulsed current are required in resistance welding calibration, welding process control, circuit breaker testing, and other special tests. This paper considers the significant error sources encountered in pulsed high-current measurements. These include sensor position, temperature, and signal processing. Uncertainty analyses are provided for the secondary measurement standard and typical commercially available measurement equipment. The most significant error contributions are discussed so that the measurement process can be properly understood. This understanding then can lead to future improvements to reduce the uncertainty of pulsed-current measurements. Planned improvements in the present measurement standards will be briefly presented.
