NAVY METROLOGY RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: FIBER OPTIC STANDARDS

In 1985 the Navy initiated the Metrology Research and Development program with the objectives of rectifying current calibration support deficiencies, and developing advanced standards support for new Navy systems. Under the direction of the Naval Sea Systems Command, the Measurement Science Laboratory of the Naval Warfare Assessment Division (NWAD), manages the Metrology R&D program. This program bridges the gap between system metrology requirements and the currently available national and Navy calibration standards. In a series of memoranda the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) recognized the advantages of fiber optics and supported its use within the Navy. In 1990 a goal was set for "..total transition in new construction of data carrying copper cable to fiber optics by the year 2000". This paper discusses the efforts made to date by the Navy's Metrology R&D program to support the objective of the CNO.
