Combustible Gas Monitoring Technology Choices and Metrology Issues

Monitoring for specific concentrations of combustible gases is accomplished using a variety of instruments, each with its own sensor technology and special calibration requirements. Individuals applying these instruments continue to face two major issues. The first is that repeated calibration verification is necessary to assure reliable and accurate performance, and the second is that no one technology can claim unconditional reliability without interference, contamination or degradation of the sensing systems. This paper will attempt to introduce the choices of technology available, the standards their use is based upon and the metrology issues one faces in their maintenance and calibration.
