As stated in the conference theme, "metrology does not exist alone, but to provide a service to production or R&D." Can this service be provided if the laboratory system(s) and the hardware/software components embedded therein have not been qualified, or frequently worse yet, if the lab systems have been changed since initial qualification and the changes have not been qualified? In short, is the Metrology Lab really up to its job in providing its service? This paper lays out an aggregate of disciplines that are necessary to operate and maintain a Metrology Laboratory. These disciplines facilitate the traceability of the Lab requirements that enable the laboratory to perform its duties. A list of eight disciplines are presented, each with a short description explaining the function(s) of each discipline, and all contributing to the operation and maintenance of the lab. Traceability techniques, along with an introduction to traceability tools, and the overall benefits of a laboratory requirements traceability program are presented.
