Audits are an integral part of the operation of every metrology laboratory, whether performing calibrations only for in-house use or as a commercial activity. The driving forces of new regulations, higher quality requirements, laboratory accreditation, certification and preferred vendor status, all act to subject a metrology lab's operation to closer scrutiny. What can be done to meet and successfully pass an audit? There are no "quick fixes" for a laboratory with inherent problems but for laboratories operating in control, there are a number of steps that can be taken to prepare. These include determining audit criteria, understanding the auditor's preparation activities, and review of the calibration process, laboratory, and staff. This paper will discuss a practical checklist and self assessment steps that can be implemented prior to the audit in order to present your lab and your staff in the best possible light.
