Government/Industry Partnership to Ensure Legal Metrology Uniformity

The National Institute of Standards and Technology includes a "Uniform Regulation for Voluntary Registration of Service Persons and Service Agencies". This program is a distinctive partnership between government regulatory officials and device equipment service and repair companies to place commercial devices (such as gas pumps or grocery scales) into legal for trade service. Specific safeguards are in place in these programs to ensure accuracy and traceability of these devices when placed into service by non-government agents. This presentation will provide specific examples and statistics regarding the economic impact of these programs in terms of cost savings to government programs and financial incentives for participating businesses. National Conference on Weights and Measures The National Institute of Standards and Technology sponsors the National Conference on Weights and Measures. The NCWM consists of state government weights and measures officials, federal government officials, industry members, and consumer members. The NCWM is responsible for providing model laws and regulations for state government weights and measures jurisdictions to adopt. The standing committees of the NCWM are Specifications and Tolerances; Laws and Regulations; Executive; and Education, Administration, and Consumer Affairs. The Specifications and Tolerances committee responds to matters that pertain to NIST Handbook 44 and technical issues related to the National Type Evaluation program. The Laws and Regulations committee addresses items concerning NIST Handbooks 130 and 133. The Executive committee serves as a policy making and coordinating body regarding matters of national and international significance. This committee also serves as the Board of Governors of the National Type Evaluation Program. The Education committee responds to matters concerning education, training, public relations, and administrative procedures.
