PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF A BLACKBODY CALIBRATION USING CALCULATION AS AN ABSOLUTE REFERENCE

Blackbody (BB) temperature is usually determined by a contact temperature measuring device such as a thermal couple, or a non-contact temperature measuring device such as an infrared thermometer. In either case, the assumption that the BB is "perfectly black" must be invoked. To test how valid the assumption is, we compare the BB temperature measurements using three infrared thermometers and one optical pyrometer with overlap temperature ranges. In addition, we calculate the temperature based on the total power measured by an electrically calibrated pyroelectrical radiometer. The calculated temperatures are in good agreement with those measured with the non-contact temperature measuring devices. All the meters used in this paper are traceable to National Institute of Standards and Technology. This study is made in an attempt to establish the feasibility of using the calculation as an absolute reference for quantitative analysis of the BB quality.
