Image coding is one of the most important applications of wavelets. There has been increasing number of reports each year since the late 1980's on the design of new wavelet coders and variations to existing ones. In this paper several wavelet-based coders are compared in their performance with still images. The aim of this work is to choose a suitable wavelet coder for intraframe coding that is needed for video compression. Two image quality metrics were used in the comparative study: the compression ratio and the conventional distortion measure, peak signal-to-noise ratio. Also, the effects of different wavelet filters are assessed. The work also aims to establish a suitable computer measure to assess the reconstructed image.
