The thermal and hydraulic characteristics of straight-channel longitudinal fin heat sinks under forced convection air cooling is studied numerically using computational fluid dynamics methods. The aim of the study is to investigate the means ofreducing the detailed component-level model of the heat sink to an equivalent lump-parameter model suitable for system-level analysis. The parameters studied include the tip clearance, fin density and aspect ratio across a range of approach flow rates.Detailed results on the local heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the heat sink are presented. These results are used to derive correlations for the flow bypass, apparent friction factor, and heat transfer coefficients which are necessaryfor reducing the detailed models to reduced-parameter equivalents suitable for system-level analysis.
