A 30×30 array of metal-insulator-metal cathodes was fabricated and operated using a one-line-at-a-time scheme. The emission current density was 5.8 mA/cm~2, which is sufficient for cathodoluminescent displays with 4-kV acceleration. The spatial beam broadening was smaller than that of field-emission displays (FEDs) by an order of magnitude. The self-focusing nature makes it possible to develop a high-resolution and high-luminance flat-panel display.
