Towards the goal of making a rugged and lightweight flat panel display, we have investigated the fabrication of display elements on thin stainless steel foils. High quality amorphous Si (a-Si) thin film transistors (TFTs) on steel foils and efficient doped-polymer organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) have been separately developed. In this paper, the integration of OLEDs with a-Si TFTs onto steel foils and the demonstration of a simple circuit using the TFT to drive the OLED are reported. The finished structure can withstand considerable mechanical stress, such as being dropped 30 feet onto concrete and bending. The combinations of the lightweight and rugged TFT backplanes with OLEDs may be used to build a robust and highly portable active-matrix emissive flat panel display technology.
