Six kinds of copper concentrates were treatedindividually in a pilot scale Outokumpu flsah smeltingfurnace in order to study their flash smelting behaviorwith respect to oxygen efficiency and dust generation. The copper concentrates tested were selected from themore than twenty sources which are treated at theSumitomo Toyo copper smelter, so as to provide a widerange of chemical composition in terms of Cu, S, Fe, Pb+ Zn + As, and SiO2 content. Oxygen efficiency and dustgeneration rates obtained in the experiments ranged from80% to 108% and 11% to 20%, respectively. Pelationshipsbetween these results and experimental conditions suchas chemical and mineral composition of the copperconcentrates, flux ratio, fuel consumption and so on arealso discussed quantitatively in this paper.
