The impact against steering wheel and upper dashboard on frontal and overlap collisions is greatly responsable for the high level of head and chest injuries, even on belted drivers. The use of airbags may reduce that level of severity but there's a substantial work to be done in terms of ergonomics and new materials in order to decrease the incidence of head injuries for that kind of impact. In this work, an analysis of car interior geometry is presented and surface hardness of steering wheels and dashboards of current models on the market and the future trends on ergonomical and material issues are discussed.
