A four year project carried out with the financial aid of the European Coal & Steel Community has the fundamental aim to demonstrate the applicability of sprayforming as a viable process for industrial scale steel production. The Osprey Process has potential for the manufacture of special steel alloys. However it was evident from earlier studies, that the technology was not sufficiently developed to permit production on an industriel scale because of an abcence of understanding of the process control required to manufacture large billet products. The objective has been to extend the sprayforming technology of steel billets up to 400 mm in diameter and of up to approximately 1000 kg. weight in the horizontal orientation. This presentation updates the earlier paper given at the PM~2TEC 95 conference in Seattle and describes completion of the commissioning of the demonstration plant and details the process development and evaluation work carried out.
