摘要

This paper summarizes current and emerging mechanics based methods for predicting crack growth and fracture. In particular, history dependent fracture, where a material has undergone one or more sources of nonlinear deformation prior to crack initiation and growth, is discussed. A number of classical methods of fracture prediction are overviewed, and examples are presented which illustrate performance for history dependent situations. In addition, emerging fracture parameters are discussed which have the potential to characterize failure for materials that have undergone important prior fabrication history. Again, some examples are illustrated. One main focus of this paper is to illustrate the effect of prior history on fracture response, and to point out the areas where the current methods need improvement.
