Development and User Experience of New Methodologies of Structural Integrity Assessment

It had become accepted in the early 1970s that the existence and use of non-destructive inspection techniques meant that virtually every structure was unacceptable according to strict interpretation of extant Design Codes, which demanded no crack-like defects. Experience, however, suggested that most structures could fulfil their design intent even in the presence of such defects. Subsequent investigations led to standardised procedures to allow engineers to assess known or postulated defects. Starting from this historic perspective, the first paper of the session by sharples, et al describes recent unifying developments within Europe involving the R6 Defect Assessment Procedure, develop the theme of 'Development and user experience of new methodologies of structural integrity assessment' further by providing specific examples of applications of the Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD) approach to defect assessment based on the R6 Procedure. These examples respectively cover experimental validation of the treatment of residual stresses, analysis of the ICAS (International Comparative Assessment Study) PTS benchmark problem and assessment of crack-tip constraint and through-wall attenuation of neutron dose in assessing temperature margins for reference defects in Magnox steel reactor pressure vessels.
