The testing, data analysis, and computer modeling of a flat steel plate under extreme loading conditions of explosive impact loading is presented in detail. The unique application of classical design of experiment (DOE) to construct the test matrix, perform the statistical analysis on the resulting test data from the 3{sup}2 fully factorial 9-run test series with three different instrumentation systems, explosive weights and locations on the steel flat plate is presented and discussed in detail. Computer simulation of stress wave analysis of the test-bed flat steel plate with explosive pyroshock loading and a comparative match to actual test shock response spectra are presented. The agreement of computer simulation to test data is indicated. The relationship of work hardness at and below the surface of ASTM A36, HR steel subjected to repeated identical explosive impacts is demonstrated with test data.
