A generalized numerical scheme for problems involving highly deformable free surfaces is developed based on combined level set formulation and multizone adaptive finite volume scheme. The interface is captured by the level set function. The multizone adaptive finite volume algorithm is used to generate grids for irregular domains and make the solution procedure computationally efficient. The resulting scheme is capable of accurate and efficient representation of irregular surfaces, fast tracking of moving interfaces/surfaces between the phases, and deformation, merger and break-up of free surfaces caused by impingement, collision and other phenomena. Four complex problems of liquid-liquid and liquid-solid systems are considered to demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of this new scheme.
