The Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK/spl middot/CEN) has been a pioneer of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. A significant contributing factor has been the attention given to effective research management through the adaptation of performance measures which have primary ownership within the academic and research community. At the same time, SCK/spl middot/CEN's financial support of doctoral and post-doctoral research in close collaboration with universities is a vital ingredient for securing a quality profile committed to the pursuit of excellence. FLINS (Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent technologies in Nuclear Science) was initially built within one of the post-doctoral research projects at SCK/spl middot/CEN. Among SCK/spl middot/CEN's activities which will have an important impact on its scientific future, the application of fuzzy logic and intelligent technologies in nuclear science and engineering opens up new domains in radiation protection, safety assessment, human reliability, nuclear reactor control, waste and disposal, etc. This paper reports on the initial R&D activity on fuzzy logic applications at SCK/spl middot/CEN, namely: (1) fuzzy control for a nuclear reactor, and (2) a safety evaluation model for transmission lines.
