In the report, data on the environmental contamination of the Uike Baikal Region, including the state of water resuurees, and on the aggravation of the population's health in this region are presented. It may lie asserted that tinder modem conditions of technology any kind of economic activities, and especially industry, has a negative influence on the biosphere and public health. In the Irkutsk region the leading role in this respect belongs to the chemical industry, petroleum processing, non-ferrous metallurgy, deep wood processing, and power industry. At present, there are considerable areas of contamination by emissions of industrial enterprises and thermal power plants (Table 1).
