The attainment of a large phase shift ≈ Π for a weak probe pulse that is conditional on the presence of (and nonlinear interaction with) a single-photon control pulse is highly desirable for quantum logic and communication. It has been recently shown that when a resonance associated with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an atomic ensemble is modulated by an off-resonant standing wave field, a band of frequencies can appear for which light propagation is forbidden: a photonic band gap (PBG) [1]. We propose a method to achieve a large conditional phase shift of the probe pulse ε{sub}p in the presence of the control pulse ε whose carrier frequency is within the PBG.
