Poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic anhydride) (PMVE-MA or Gantrez), an alternant copolymer of methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride, has been widely used in oral care. Gantrez derivative salts are always appeared in denture adhesive as described in patents. Divalent or trivalent metal ions are often employed to crosslink PMVE-MA copolymers to provide superior denture stability and retention over a significantly longer period of time versus conventional denture adhesive. Using as adhesives, the rheological properties of this system are of critical importance. During our rheological experiments for the semidilute solutions of PMVE-MA with cupric cations in water, shear-thickening and sol-gel transition phenomena were observed. In this work, we report our observation of the shear-thickening behavior and its possible correlation to the properties at the vicinity of critical gel point.
