The synthesis of polysiloxane materials containing well-defined organic polymers is discussed using controlled/living radical polymerization techniques. In particular, the use of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) enables the synthesis of a wide range of organic/inorganic hybrid materials utilizing polysiloxane macroinitiators, or macromonomers in the polymerization of organic vinyl monomers. Hybrid block and graft copolymers have been prepared containing poly(dimethylsiloxane) (pDMS) segments, or polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) groups. Hybrid nanoparticles composed of an inorganic colloidal core and an outer shell of tethered organic polymers have been synthesized via ATRP of vinyl monomers from polysilsesquioxane nanoparticle surfaces.
