Due to previous problems experienced with a similar, relatively new 304N stainless steel tubed high pressure feedwater heater, (Karg, et al. Ref. No. 9), Santee Cooper became concerned when failures in the subject feedwater heater were suspected to also be at the exit of the desuperheat zone. Investigative analysis of all potential contributing factors included full review of failures, design details from the OEM, inspection and testing results, operational heat balance calculations performed from actual unit run data and stability modification to a condensing zone support plate at the desuperheater exit.
