Icosahedral quasicrystals have basically two types of periodic 6-dimensional images, i.e. primitive or NaCl-like cubic. The low resolution structure resulting from quasicrystallo-graphy approaches are well understood and suggest descriptions in terms of hierarchies of atomic clusters. The exact shape of atomic surfaces is still a pending question. Alternative to regularly faceted polyhedra may be thought of as intricate ensembles of many small pieces or even as surfaces with fractal borders.
