THE STRUCTURE OF DECAGONAL PHASES AND THEIR APPROXIMANTS

The structural characteristics of decagonal phases and their approximants in the systems Al-Co-Cu-(Si), Al-Co-Ni, Al-Mn-(Pd), Al-Fe-Pd and Al-Cr-Cu-Fe are reviewed and a classification according to their translation period is given of almost all known metastable and stable decagonal phases. The building units of decagonal quasicrystals and their approximants are columnar clusters with pentagonal or decagonal symmetry.
