The automatic detection of the shape of apple is a key step to realize the full automatic grading. The way of detecting the shape of apple with computer vision was investigated. As it is difficult to describe the shape by mathematical model, a comprehensive approach with fuzzy system analysis , artificial neural networks , expert system to detect the shape of apple is proposed. Tests prove that using computer vision to detect the shape of apple is feasible and practicable. The computer vision system can classify the apples into three groups: excellent, fair, undesirable, according to their shape.
