TRANSIENT EFFECTS IN DYNAMIC DCB TESTS

The analysis of a rapidly loaded double cantilever beam specimen is described. The condition for a constant energy release rate is explored using the Berry method. The steady state condition gives a continuously decreasing crack velocity but perturbations in crack length are shown to give rise to rapidly oscillating velocity variations. These are shown to occur in FE results and, it is suggested, will occur in experiments.
