For a large capacity spent fuel storage facility in an away-from-reactor site, dry storage facilities using a cooling system with natural convection, such as cask, vault and silo storage, have economic merit. To use dry storage technology in a large capacity storage facility, it is necessary to have an optimum heat removal design. To optimize such a design, it is important to evaluate the natural cooling efficiency and the limit of the cooling system by natural convection, and to establish the analytical method. For the purposes of this study, the evaluation method of a heat removal system at the cask, vault and silo storage facility is developed.
