The paper is motivated by the need to support multiple service classes in ATM networks. Asynchronous transfer mode networks are expected to carry traffic of different classes such as loss sensitive but delay-insensitive class, delay sensitive but loss-insensitive classes. The paper focuses the key problem of controlling the cell delay and cell loss in an ATM switch supporting multimedia services under bursty traffic sources. The proposed mixed priority queue (MPQ) scheme deals with the delay requirement of delay-sensitive voice traffic, the cell loss requirement of the loss-sensitive data traffic, and both the delay and cell loss requirements for delay and loss sensitive video traffic in the case of an output buffered ATM switch.
