Considerations in running TCP/IP-based networks over the X.25 public data network

The TCP/IP Internet protocol suite is the most popular networking standard for interconnecting heterogeneous computer systems in a variety of communication network environments. This paper presents some considerations in running the IP network protocol on top of an X.25 network interface. The system architecture is given first. The main focus here is on the performance of a connectionless network protocol run over a connection-oriented network protocol. Appropriate settings for an inactivity timer and the effect of special higher layer protocol operations are discussed. We also consider issues which arise in relation to address resolution, network management and security.
