The management of modern telecommunication networks is increasingly becoming a complex and demanding task that is difficult for the operator to implement using manual methods, even when assisted by conventional automation method. A preliminary study on expert systems to resolve some of the difficulties are examined. This paper also examines the cooperation between two processes, namely the network monitoring process and control system process. These two separate processes exploit the database management, graphics, man/machine interface for the data collection and status evaluation. An expert system is used to recommend the appropriate control actions to alleviate the effect of traffic stresses detected by the monitoring process. Preliminary simulation results demonstrate the validity of such a system. Future research will expand the scope of the results and may develop a hierarchical organization of several network management systems.
