The Avian Development Facility (ADF) is designed to provide a snapshot" of embryogenesis in space. It allows researchers to mitigate or nullify the forces of leaving and reentering earth's gravity, begin their experiments only after their experimental subjects have achieved orbit, monitor progress during orbit, and shut down the exxperiment before leaving orbit. In effect, the ADF does everything possible to minimize terrestrial effects in order to isolate and preserve the effects of the experimental variable(s) of the space environment.
