The Q-Markov Covariance Equivalent Realization (COVER) and Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) system identification methodologies for flexible structures are studied in this paper. These methods were selected for study since the models resulting from their use are suitable for applying modern state space control methodologies. A comparison of the methods is performed. As a result of this comparison, the Degree of Modal Purity is developed for the Q-Markov COVER methodology from a similar concept in the ERA. Finally, to demonstrate the concepts discussed in this paper, the two methods are applied to a two degree-of-freedom spring-mass-damper system.
