One of the most intriguing and unique characteristics of a living organism is its ability to self-repair. Every organism, from single-celled to mullet-celled, has this ability to fight infection, conduct cellular reproduction and repair damage due to injuries. This process of repair and regeneration represents one of the most fundamental defense mechanisms of an organism against its environment. Virtually all soft tissues will normally heal by the highly organized mechanisms of "scar formation." This permits an organism to successfully bridge defects in the original tissues. The formation of a scar consists of progressive stages of: (1) blood clotting, (2) inflammation, (3) proliferation, and (4) remodeling. These stages normally take hours, weeks, months and years, respectively. Additionally, these stages require extremely complex control mechanisms for both local and systematic coordination. Interference at one or more levels of the above mentioned process can result in inadequate healing. Some types of wounds (e.g., the thermal (burn) wound) have added complications. These include trauma, shock, the loss of the skin as a membrane barrier. This leads to increased risk of infection and contributes to dehydration risk.
