Writer-to-reader security mechanisms in military messaging offers advantages by allowing security to be applied by an originator and be preserved until reaching its recipients. These mechanisms are theoretically portable and scalable but there are concerns regarding the feasibility of writer-to-reader security mechanisms in the mobile tactical environment. This paper proposes the use of the Message Security Protocol (MSP) for writer-to-reader security and the replacement of ACP 123/X.400 P3 protocol between ACP 123 User Agents and the Message Transfer System with the MIL-STD 2045 protocol. It is argued that this optimises the communications bandwidth requirement and the protocol-processing overhead of these security mechanisms.
