Divergent evolution and resulting characteristics among the world's distribution systems

The factors which affect the evolution of world distribution systems are detailed. Their divergence, with implications for application in less developed countries, is discussed. The advantages of the North American and European style systems are described, while it is recognized that neither is intrinsically superior. The need for recognition of legitimate variances in distribution systems and their associated equipment, when developing relevant standards, is established.
