As the process for producing ferrochrome without using electric energy as heat source, the new smelting reduction process with top-and-bottom blowing converter was developed. The special feature of this process is to separate metal bath from oxygen jet by the thick layer of slag. It enables the reduction of chrome oxide in slag under the atmosphere of high post combustion. 1 ton/heat and 3 ton/heat (about 2 ton/h) scale experiments were done. And following results were obtained; (1) Operation with a large amount of slag was stable and the scale up of 30 times as oxygen flow rate was done without troubles. (2) By choosing appropriate composition of slag, it became possible to accelerate reduction and to suppress the erosion of lining, at the same time. (3) For producing low phosphorus ferrochrome with cheap carbonaceous materials (e.g. green oil coke), the process composed of rotary kiln and smelting reduction furnace was developed. Compared with conventional EF process, the advantages of this process are low energy cost, direct use of fine ore and low content of impurities in product. This process can be applied for producing other metals and alloys.
