Study on PAN-based activated carbon fiber prepared by different activation methods

Activated carbon fibers (ACF) were prepared from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor fibers by two methods: KOH activation at 400-1000°C and H_3PO_4 activation at 600-1400°C. H_3PO_4 activation yielded relatively poorly developed porosity regardless of the activation temperature, maintaining a low surface area (around 1000m~2g~(-1)) at very high burn-off, while KOH activation provided high porosities above 650°C. The microstructures of samples were studied by means of nitrogen adsorption. The nitrogen isotherms were analyzed in detail using the routine BET method, characterize the pore size distribution by DFT (theory of density function).
