In this paper the advantage of the equations of motion derived with Kane's method in terms of generalized speed components is considered and manipulated into a state space system. Based on these equations, an optimal controller for the synchronization and clutching procedure for an electric actuated continuously variable transmission EVT is presented. The generalized speed concept contains both kinematics and dynamics characteristics of the system. An optimal synchronization and clutching procedure is compared to a standard PI controller. The algorithm is implemented into a micro controller and tested in a prototype hybrid vehicle.
