The primary consolidation of most clay often ends within 1 hour, andcoefficient of volume compressibility m_v or compression index λ areconsidered to contain a significant amount of secondary compression. In one-dimensional consolidation analysis considering secondarycompression, there is a possibility of predicting an excessive totalconsolidation due to the double evaluation of the secondarycompression when the primary consolidation is obtained using m_v or λwhich include the influence of the secondary compression. We comparethe consolidation settlement calculated by using the coefficient ofvolume compressibility m_p defined by the primary consolidationproposed by the authors and the consolidation settlement calculated bym_v . We point out that in the general calculation method using m_v or λ,the secondary compression amount is overlapped evaluation.
