Steel is one of the most important materials used in ships and offshoreconstructions. High steel quality standards are especially in theconstruction of autonomous or manned underwater vehicles veryimportant. In order to fulfill the high demands on materials, numerousnon-destructive tests as well as destructive sampling are performedthroughout the production process. Nonetheless, the reliable detection ofnear surface defects in production conditions remains challenging as oftoday. This article gives an overview over the defects’ origins and typicalgeometries as well as available testing methods. As thermographypromises to be the most successful testing method for the requirements,an insight into the limitations of this method is given.
